Car Research

Everything here is about you rather than about one search — where you are, when you are buying, what a mile costs you, and the cars and brands you have already ruled in or out. Set up asks the same questions once, in order, and prices each answer; this page changes any of them afterwards, in any order.

Where you are buying

★ marks the ten cities EIA surveys weekly for gasoline. The other thirty inherit from their state, then their PADD region.

About you

The assumptions behind every dollar in the ranking. Left alone they are US averages and the metro’s own energy prices — which is a guess about you, not a measurement.

Decides which model years you can buy new, one year old or two. Set up shows what each answer costs you in cars.

The single biggest lever on running cost, and the one nobody else can guess.

Depreciation is most of a short hold and almost none of a long one.

Replaces the local tariff outright, including any time-of-use split.

The engine’s 7.5% is a national placeholder. Your own rate beats it.

Changing these re-costs every car on the server, so it reloads the page. They travel in the link too, so anyone you send it to sees the same numbers.

Brands

Reject takes a brand out of the ranking and out of Features, Quality and Style — wider than hiding a single car, which only leaves the ranking table. Favour changes no score at all: it marks those cars in the table and lets you show only them. Neither travels in a link, so a ranking you send is not narrowed by your brand list.

Cars you have hidden

You have not hidden any cars. The ✕ on a row in the ranking hides it, and it comes back here.

Cars you have starred

You have not starred any cars. The ★ on a row in the ranking marks one.

Cars you marked 0 for looks also leave the table. That is a different thing from hiding one and it is undone on Style, where you set it.

Where these prices come from estimated

Prices for the US average: gasoline inherited from a wider area, flat average electricity (no time-of-use tariff matched).

The overall badge shows the weakest confidence of these figures, not the best one — nothing gets more trustworthy by being averaged with something that was actually measured. Anything you typed in yourself reads You set this and drops to estimated, however well you know your own bill: the scale describes what this app can vouch for, and it cannot vouch for a number typed into a box. Finance, taxes and fees are not localised at all — they keep the engine’s labelled national placeholder rather than an unlabelled invention.
